I need a book with lots of apparent themes in it so I could write a whole lengthy essay on it. Anyone have any recommendations?

Virginia Woolf's "To The Lighthouse." The most action in the book is a character throws a dinner party - all the action happens on a psychological level. Virginia Woolf was a feminist, so read the book from her perspective.
I did an English BA so I have tons of notes :P

you might like J.M. Coetzee's "Waiting for the Barbarians" - it won a nobel prize - it's about a government official who wants to prove the barbarians are massing for an attack so he captures native hostages and tortures false confessions out of them...

"Things Fall Apart" - it's a book about 1890s Nigeria. The main character is a traditional Nigerian, but then the British come and colonize and shit goes down. Good book.

Shakespeare's "The Tempest" is another thinking book. You can discuss how the dialogue between Prospero and Caliban serves as an allegory for the colonizer and the colonized.

Muriel Spark's "The Prime of Miss Jean Brodie" is an awesome book about how literature can cause people to fictionalize reality. In the book the teacher romanticizes her life.
